Fear and Loathing in Benghazi
John McCain made a surprise visit to Libya today in order to get what he calls an “on the ground assessment of the situation.” McCain is the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Forces committee and has been up in arms, figuratively speaking, over pursuing Qaddafi and his supporters.
Why now, John? The rebellion has been underway for two months. You’ve advocated for an increase in military presence the entire time. Isn’t the situation supposed to get assessed before you make a decision rather than after? I would like more details on how you’re going to perform your assessment. You say you’re going to meet with “your heroes” the rebel leaders. (Who is leading anything? I see a gagglefuck of Libyans who are demanding that NATO set them free because they started a poorly planned revolution without establishing any kind of network for command and control. (To be fair, they didn’t ask for a revolution. They just wanted to demonstrate without getting shot.)) What are you going to ask them? “What is the situation here? Excuse me, do you know what the situation is?” Not good enough, John.
I want numbers and dates, and numbers and numbers and dates.
